Full description

Take a short 5-minute ferry ride across beautiful Shoalwater Bay and head to the Discovery Center to meet the world's smallest penguins.

For this 2.5 hour activity, use your ferry ticket to get to the island. Visit the Discovery Center to see 20-minute penguin feeding. If you have more time, you can explore the island as you like: It is best to plan at least 2 hours.

Swim, snorkel (bring your own gear) and enjoy a picnic. Watch breeding pelicans and other seabirds up close, especially in September and October when chicks hatch. Use binoculars to watch dolphins and whales from September to December.

Important information

You know, before you go

  • The meeting point is easily reached by car or public transport. Free parking is available on site
  • Feeding the penguins takes about 20 minutes
  • The Penguin Island is a nature reserve, so there are no shops or cafes. There is an excellent picnic area and you are welcome to bring your own food and drinks. The Pengos CafĂ© (on the mainland) is open daily for breakfast, lunch and coffee (for dining and takeaway).
  • Coolers, picnic baskets, surfboards, fishing gear, snorkeling and diving gear are all on the ferry
  • Bring comfortable shoes or straps, a bathing suit and towels. A warm weatherproof jacket is also recommended in summer
